"The Birds," "Fiddler" on St. Petersburg stages

St. Peterburg's two major theater companies are both offering plays based on classic stories that were turned into iconic movies.
"Fiddler" at freeFall
That's the end of the similarities, though. American Stage's "The Birds" is a bleak mood-piece, loosely based on the Daphne DuMaurier book on which Alfred Hitchcock loosely based a film. It's a rare misfire from Conor McPherson, one of the best contemporary playwrights.
Meanwhile, freeFall's "Fiddler on the Roof," the iconic musical based on a story by Sholem Aleichem, is a delight, with a revelatory performance by David Mann as Tevye.
"The Birds" starts off promising something special. Before curtain, the audience sits immersed in Jeffrey W. Dean's ominous set, the interior of house under attack by birds gone wild. Sound designer Todd Olson, who also directed, enhances the mood with distant birds sounds. It's a chilling pre-show. But then...
Just as show time approaches, the bird sounds silence, and the audience, almost literally captive, is subjected to three long curtain speeches -- two live, once recorded -- that total 15 boring, repetitive minutes of people mostly begging for donations.
The mood never recovers from those inexcusable infomercials. McPherson's play is alright, but not anywhere near as good as his best works ("Shining City" and "The Seafarer") and it couldn't dig itself out of the hole the curtain speeches dug for it.
It's the story of disparate people trapped in a house under attack, and doesn't seem to know what it wants to say. Fine performances by Roxanne Fay and Joseph Parra, that phenomenal set and great lighting by Joseph P. Oshry made the evening passable, but nothing more.
But freeFall's "Fiddler" is a treat. The staging by Eric Davis, the music direction by the great Michael Raabe and, especially, the performance by Mann make the overly familiar 50-year-old musical a treat.

Mann takes the role defined by Zero Mostel and Chaim Topol and re-invents it. Tevye's always been a lovable character, but he's usually portrayed as somewhat blubbering, even buffoonish. Mann makes him smart and lets the audience feel a profound level of sympathy for him.
The whole production is strong, and it's staged in the round so it the experience is more intimate than what we're accustomed to from musicals.
   "The Birds" runs through Oct. 27 at American Stage, 163 Third St. N., St. Petersburg. 8 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday. $39-$49. 727-893-7529, www.americanstage.org.
   "Fiddler on the Roof" runs through Nov. 3 at freeFall Theatre, 6099 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. $29-$39. 727-498-5205, www.freefalltheatre.com.

Party celebrates second annual Bradenton Blues Festival

The second annual Bradenton Blues Festival is still about seven weeks away, but music lovers and community leaders gathered at Tarpon Pointe Grill Thursday evening to celebrate its pending arrival.
GrandPre's original artwork
Officially, the event was the Bradenton Blues Festival VIP Sponsor Party. Bankers, business leaders and blues fans buzzed about how great the inaugural event was and how much better it's going to be this year.
"They did an incredible job last year," said Tom Carter, president of the Suncoast Blues Society. "And it's going to be even more incredible this year. The lineup is just fantastic."
This year's blues festival is set for Dec. 7 on the Riverwalk. Headliners include Shemekia Copeland and Trampled Underfoot.
"It's one of the best, most organized events I've ever been to," said Bill Cornelius, one of the owners of the Blue Rooster in Sarasota. "All the artists were real blues artists and the setting was absolutely beautiful."
Cornelius has lived in Sarasota for about three years and said he discovered Bradenton through the blues festival last year. Now he's gearing up to open a brewery in Bradenton.
One of the centerpieces of the party was the unveiling of the original artwork for this year's festival. It was created by Mary GrandPre, who's best known for illustrating the Harry Potter books.
Isham, Jack Sullivan of Blues Music
 magazine, Strauss

The painting, which retains a similar central image from last year's artwork but with a different color palette, is bring auctioned off. Johnette Isham, the executive director of Realize Bradenton, the organizer of the blues festival, started the bidding at $1,500.
   "It's worth $30,000," she said.
Probably no one in the area has more experience staging blues festivals than Barbara Strauss, the founder of the erstwhile Sarasota Blues Festival. She came to the party to show her support for Bradenton's festival.
"When I show up for something it means I really want to support it," she said. "I think what they did was absolutely brilliant, fantastic. They brought the community together."
You can order tickets and get more information about the Bradenton Blues Festival at www.bradentonbluesfestival.org.

Longboat Key writer's musical hits the road

A few weeks back, Longboat Key playwright Philip Hall learned that, for the first time, one of his musicals would be getting a full-fledged New York City production.
Now he's found out that, once that production winds up its New York run, it'll go on the road.
Hall
Hall's musical "Life on The Mississippi" is based on Mark Twain's memoir, and it's set to open at the WorkShop Theater in Manhattan on Nov. 1. (You can read more about Hall and his work here: www.bradenton.com/2013/09/29/4742638/longboat-key-playwright-gains.html.)
WorkShop Theater had been developing Hall's musical for three years, and it turns out that people who run the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Conn., (where Twain lived from 1874 until 1891) saw one of the preliminary productions and loved it.
So after the musical finishes its three-week New York run, it's moving to the Mark Twain House, where it will open Dec. 14.
