The Who announce U.S. tour; band visits Orlando in November

The Who's lone original members, chief songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Pete Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey, are taking "Quadrophenia" and other favorites from the band's rich past on the road this fall.

The U.S. tour will follow a performance at the Olympic Games in London.

Townshend and Daltrey made the announcement Wednesday during an online video conference.

The Who's classic 1973 album "Quadrophenia" will be played in its entirety.

The tour kicks off in Sunrise on Nov. 1 and then visits the Amway Center in Orlando Nov. 3, a Saturday, before heading north through Georgia.

American Express presale for the U.S. dates runs July 23-26 and July 23-25 in Canada before the general public on sale 10 a.m. July 27.

Tickets for the tour will be available at www.aeglive.com

It will be The Who's first North American tour in four years. The band played a rescheduled date at Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa in 2007, after a cancellation during the first song.

Townshend on “Quadrophenia”

Why do you think the music, the themes of “Quadrophenia”–both the album and film adaptation–resonate so strongly today?

In 1972 I was twenty-eight, writing about London and Brighton in 1963 and 1964 when the band was just starting. I was still young enough to remember how it felt to be sixteen or seventeen, and at war with my parents, bosses and authority. I could still remember that feeling of struggling to fit in, something that happened to me when I was even younger, around fourteen, and everyone around me seemed to have got their lives on track. This is such a universal experience for young people that it has echoed.

New Bob Dylan album 'Tempest': release date and track listing

After more than a month of rumors, Columbia Records announced today that Bob Dylan’s new studio album, "Tempest," will be released on September 11.

It features 10 new and original Dylan songs.

The release of "Tempest" coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the artist’s self-titled debut album, which was released by Columbia in 1962.

"Tempest" is available for pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon. The new album, produced by Jack Frost (aka Dylan), is the 35thth studio set from the artist who was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor.

"Tempest" track listing (via iTunes):

1. Duquesne Whistle
Possible story behind the song: "Duquesne is a little Pennsylvania steel town, twelve miles up the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh. For two years its 21,000 inhabitants watched the tires die in the blast furnaces one by one. Then for two more years the furnaces were cold. Duquesne called it Depression. One day last week, Duquesne whistles shrieked, Duquesne bells clanged. Followed by the city council and most of the leading businessmen. Mayor Crawford marched into the local works of Carnegie Steel Co., picked up a long iron blow pipe, thrust the red-hot tip through a hole in a furnace, igniting..."

2. Soon After Midnight
3. Narrow Way
4. Long and Wasted Years
5. Pay in Blood
6. Scarlet Town
7. Early Roman Kings
8. Tin Angel
9. Tempest
10. Roll on John

Top 10: Rolling Stones albums

The Rolling Stones celebrated the 50th anniversary of their first official gig last week, prompting me to write this Sunday column about how the album 'Steel Wheels' saved the group.

I wrote while "Steel Wheels" might be the most important LP in regard to the group's survival, the Stones have issued at least a dozen better studio albums over the years.

Here are my favorites.

Bonus: "'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!' The Rolling Stones in Concert" (1970)  is my favorite official live Stones album (key tracks: "Stray Cat Blues," "Jumpin' Jack Flash,""Carol.") Actually, it's the only live Stones album really worth owning. Except, it's not really live. Lots of overdubs. That's why I prefer the bootlegs, especially from that killer 1969 tour.
