'Bonnie & Clyde' on Broadway in December

The outlaw musical "Bonnie & Clyde," which enjoyed a winning run last year at the Asolo Rep in Sarasota, will open on Broadway in December at the Schoenfield Theatre.

The production, which held an industry reading earlier this month has been receiving great buzz from insiders, including the hard to please Michael Riedel in the New York Post. 

Laura Osnes (Bonnie), Jeremy Jordan (Clyde) and pretty much the rest of the cast seen on stage in Sarasota will be performing in New York.

Broadway-bound 'Wonderland' in Tampa today through Jan. 16

Famed composer Frank Wildhorn’s “Wonderland” musical—loosely based on the Lewis Carroll classics “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass”—premiered about a year ago at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, marking the first production in the center’s Broadway Genesis Project.

A revised and re-subtitled “Wonderland: A New Alice. A New Musical” returns to Tampa today boasting “four new songs, a vastly revised book (script), two new major cast members and a set on steroids,” reads the Straz Website.

Wildhorn recently spent time in Sarasota overseeing the highly successful run of his “Bonnie & Clyde” musical, which played at the Asolo Rep and is planned to open on Broadway in September.

"Wonderland" plays at the Straz through Jan. 16. The Tampa performances are previews of the Broadway production. Previews in New York begin March 21 and the show opens April 17 at the Marquis Theatre.

'Bonnie & Clyde' star Laura Osnes lands another Broadway role

Laura Osnes will be joining Tony Award winners Joel Grey and Sutton Foster on Broadway for a revival of "Anything Goes," reports PlayBill.com.

The 25-year-old is starring in "Bonnie & Clyde" at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota through Dec. 19.

Osnes will join the musical's composer, Frank Wildhorn, for a concert at the Asolo on Dec. 21.

As reported here, "Bonnie & Clyde" is confirmed to open on Broadway in September, 2011.

On March 10 of the same year, the Cole Porter musical "Anything Goes" begins previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

Holmes Beach teen Holly Rizzo has been seen numerous times on local stages.

For instance the Manatee Players' season opener "South Pacific" featured her as Bloody Mary's beautiful daughter Liat.

But nothing could quite prepare Rizzo for playing Young Bonnie in the Broadway-bound musical "Bonnie & Clyde" currently playing at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota.

She will make her final appearance today and Saturday at 8 p.m.

REVIEW: 'Bonnie & Clyde' at Asolo Rep in Sarasota

 “Bonnie & Clyde” opened Friday at the Asolo Repertory Theatre with a bang — actually quite a few deadly bangs — and by night’s end proved worthy of all the buzz it has created.

Before rehearsals for the new musical began last month, the latest production by the famed Frank Wildhorn (music) and the legendary Don Black (lyrics) already ranked as the region’s must-see stage event of the season. After premiering at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego in 2009, the Asolo announced “Bonnie & Clyde” would have a Sarasota run before a planned Broadway production in 2011. Numerous revisions took place and more than about a third of the songs made their world premieres Friday.

Nearly every scene and music number worked to paint a fresh, poignant portrait of the iconic outlaw sweethearts.

I just returned from the opening night after-party for the "Bonnie & Clyde" musical at the Asolo Repertory's Mertz Theatre in Sarasota. My glowing review of the play will run Sunday. Here are some pics I took at tonight's festivities.

Great pic of Dolly Parton with Jeff Calhoun on set of 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas'

So I'm interviewing director Jeff Calhoun about the national production of "9 to 5" for a story to advance its Oct. 26-31 run at the Straz in Tampa.

We get talking about working with Dolly Parton and he's gushing about this cool pic he took with her the first time they worked together, when he played a bit part in the 1982 hit film "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."

The photo he sent me apparently went to my junk email and I kinda forgot about it. But when I met Calhoun at the Ringling International Arts Festival — he's in Sarasota directing "Bonnie & Clyde" musical that opens Nov. 12 — the actor/director/choreographer was adamant about me seeing the pic and resent it from his phone.

Anyway, here it is... Thanks, Jeff!

FYI: He sent copies of the pic out to family during the holidays. The writing is him wishing "Mom + Pops" a "Merry Christmas '81."
