The Tony Awards would've been a bit more fun, for me, at least, to see the Asolo Rep alumni who were members of the "Bonnie & Clyde" team pick up trophies.

But host Neil Patrick Harris proved highly entertaining again, as did the winners.

Even I if had never met/interviewed any of them recently in Sarasota.

Many gave great speeches worth quoting.

Here's my favorite, from Mike Nichols, accepting the award for best director of a play for "Death of a Salesman."

There's not a person in this theater that doesn't know what it is to be a salesman - to be out there in the blue riding on a smile and a shoeshine. As we know, a salesman has got to dream. It goes with the territory.

'Bonnie & Clyde' stars Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan earn Tony Award nominations

Local theatergoers should want to watch the Tony Awards more than ever this year now that a slew of former Asolo Rep creative and cast members have earned nominations.

Listed below are the nominees who have joined the professional theater company in the past for productions in Sarasota.


The Tony Awards will be broadcast 8 p.m. June 10  on CBS.

Laura Osnes: Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Broadway’s "Bonnie & Clyde." Appeared in "Bonnie & Clyde" at Asolo Rep in 2010


Jeremy Jordan: Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Broadway's "Newsies." Appeared in "Bonnie & Clyde" at Asolo Rep in 2010.

Judy Kaye: Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Appeared in "Souvenir" at Asolo Rep in 2009.

Broadway-bound 'Wonderland' in Tampa today through Jan. 16

Famed composer Frank Wildhorn’s “Wonderland” musical—loosely based on the Lewis Carroll classics “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass”—premiered about a year ago at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, marking the first production in the center’s Broadway Genesis Project.

A revised and re-subtitled “Wonderland: A New Alice. A New Musical” returns to Tampa today boasting “four new songs, a vastly revised book (script), two new major cast members and a set on steroids,” reads the Straz Website.

Wildhorn recently spent time in Sarasota overseeing the highly successful run of his “Bonnie & Clyde” musical, which played at the Asolo Rep and is planned to open on Broadway in September.

"Wonderland" plays at the Straz through Jan. 16. The Tampa performances are previews of the Broadway production. Previews in New York begin March 21 and the show opens April 17 at the Marquis Theatre.

Broadway stars in Sarasota: Laura Osnes, Rob Evan join Frank Wildhorn for intimate concert

When Wildhorn called the Herald from New York, he was splitting time between “Wonderland” rehearsals and putting finishing touches on ex-wife (and close friend) Linda Eder’s upcoming album for Sony Masterworks. His frequent lyricist Jack Murphy (“The Civil War,” “Rudolf”) wrote the words for the Eder record and some of those songs will be debuted at the Asolo performance, as well.

In between songs, audiences will be treated to behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the Broadway titan.

“I’ll be telling plenty of stories,” Wildhorn said.

'Bonnie & Clyde' musical has been a fun ride

Laura Osnes will be joining Tony Award winners Joel Grey and Sutton Foster on Broadway for a revival of "Anything Goes," reports PlayBill.com.

The 25-year-old is starring in "Bonnie & Clyde" at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota through Dec. 19.

Osnes will join the musical's composer, Frank Wildhorn, for a concert at the Asolo on Dec. 21.

As reported here, "Bonnie & Clyde" is confirmed to open on Broadway in September, 2011.

On March 10 of the same year, the Cole Porter musical "Anything Goes" begins previews at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

Check out the new trailer (posted below) for the "Bonnie & Clyde" musical playing now through December 19 at the Asolo Repertory in Sarasota.  The production will then open on Broadway in September.

Not sure when the performance was shot but the interviews were definitely taped during the Nov. 19 opening night gala I attended. In addition to stars Laura Osnes (Bonnie) and Jeremy Jordan (Clyde) there are interviews with members of the first-rate creative team that includes famed composer Frank Wildhorn and legendary lyricist Don Black.
